DisclaimerThis blog is intended for educational purposes only and is not a substitute for insurance, legal, or medical advice. Insurance plans and benefits vary widely. It is always important to contact your insurance provider directly to verify coverage, benefits, and eligibility before starting speech therapy.

One of the most common questions we hear is: “Is speech therapy covered by insurance?”It’s an important question—and an understandable one. Insurance can feel confusing, overwhelming, and inconsistent, especially when you’re already focused on supporting yourself or your family member.
The short answer is: sometimes. Speech therapy coverage depends on several factors, including your insurance plan, the reason for therapy, and the provider you choose. Our goal in this post is to explain how speech therapy insurance typically works, what options may be available, and how we help clients navigate the process at Virtual Speech Solutions.
Why Insurance Coverage for Speech Therapy Varies
Speech therapy coverage is not the same across all insurance plans. Even within the same insurance company, benefits can differ significantly from one plan to another.
Coverage may depend on:
The specific insurance plan
The diagnosis or reason for therapy
Whether services are considered medically necessary
The age of the client
Whether the provider is in-network or out-of-network
Because of these variables, two families with the same insurance carrier may have very different speech therapy coverage.
Common Reasons Speech Therapy May Be Covered
In some cases, insurance plans do cover speech therapy. Coverage is more likely when:
Therapy is related to a medical diagnosis
A physician has referred the client
Services are considered medically necessary
The provider is in-network with the insurance plan
Plans such as Medicare and some commercial policies may include speech therapy benefits when specific criteria are met.
Insurance Plans Accepted at Virtual Speech Solutions
At Virtual Speech Solutions, we strive to make services as accessible as possible while remaining transparent about coverage.
We currently accept:
Kaiser Permanente
Medicare
Blue Shield of California
Coverage through these plans depends on your individual policy and benefits. Even if we accept your insurance, we strongly encourage you to contact your insurance provider to confirm eligibility, coverage details, and any required authorizations.
What Does “Out-of-Network” Mean?
If a provider does not have a contract with your insurance plan, they are considered out-of-network. This does not mean you cannot receive services—it simply means your insurance may handle payment differently.
With out-of-network speech therapy:
Clients typically pay for services upfront
Insurance may reimburse part of the cost, depending on the plan
Reimbursement amounts vary widely
We provide a Superbill that you may submit to your insurance
Some families choose out-of-network providers because of availability, specialization, or preference for virtual care.
What Is a Superbill?
For clients who are out-of-network, Virtual Speech Solutions provides a superbill upon request.
A superbill is a detailed receipt that includes:
Provider information
Diagnosis and service codes
Dates of service
Amount paid
Clients can submit the superbill to their insurance company for possible speech therapy reimbursement. It’s important to note that reimbursement is determined by the insurance plan—not the provider—and is not guaranteed.
Understanding Speech Therapy Reimbursement
Reimbursement depends entirely on your individual insurance policy. Factors that affect reimbursement may include:
Out-of-network benefits
Deductibles
Coinsurance rates
Annual therapy limits
Some plans reimburse a percentage of the cost, while others may apply payments toward a deductible. Your insurance provider can explain how reimbursement works for your plan.
Questions to Ask Your Insurance Provider
To better understand your benefits, we recommend asking your insurance provider the following questions before starting therapy:
Is speech therapy covered under my plan?
Does coverage apply to my specific concern or diagnosis?
Do I have out-of-network benefits for speech therapy?
What percentage of the cost is reimbursed?
Is there a deductible I must meet first?
Is there a limit on the number of visits per year?
Is prior authorization required?
Does my plan cover virtual speech therapy?
Having this information upfront can help you make informed decisions and avoid surprises.
